HASTE – Chapter 3

The Takahashi household was eerily silent that night. Yousuke had gone to meet up with a potential choreographer for their upcoming tour and Angelo was on a date with his newest girlfriend, a young woman from the studio they had recorded at earlier today. Tao had locked himself up in his room in preparation for his exams in a few weeks, so there was no telling if they would see him again tonight. Kylee glanced to the corner where Shindou read a new volume of Vampire Knight in silence and then to Hayden who was unenthusiastically playing a round of Team Fortress 2. She couldn’t be sure but it seemed as if there was enough tension in the room to smother a small child.

“Would anyone like some tea?” Ethan asked softly, hoping that the soothing beverage would help to calm everyone’s nerves. Without waiting for her brothers to respond, she exited the room and made her way to the kitchen, leaving the tension filled room to its own devices.

Shindou glared over the top of his manga at his brother, who glanced back at him in response. “You really hit me?”

The corner of Hayden’s lip turned upwards and Shindou scowled. The bastard was provoking him. He sat his book down on the table and crossed the room to stand over his elder brother. “Are you in love with Kylee?”

Hayden stared at his brother in mild amusement. The question hadn’t shocked him at all. He’d actually expected it, just not so soon.

“I love her.”

Shindou’s eyes narrowed and he shook his head. “That’s not what I asked. Are you IN love with the Princess?”

“I have no obligation to answer that.” Hayden spat and Shindou scowled.

“I will take your response as a yes then.” He remarked before frowning. “I can’t let you have her. I hope you know that.”

Hayden smiled coldly before responding, “None of us can have her. You of all people should know that.”

Shindou’s face darkened.

“I never agreed to Yousuke’s rules.”

“Entering HASTE was your agreement.” Hayden muttered bitterly, thinking about his own concurrence.

“Then I quit.” Shindou griped and moved to leave the room, nearly crashing into an abashed Ethan.

“Guyssssss.” came the  exasperated sigh from Kylee as she rounded the corner. tray of tea in hand, and stared at her brothers in frustration. “Why are you guys actually practicing that? The script is just plain weird. I mean, what is Yousuke thinking?”

Shindou and Hayden nodded in each other’s direction before laughing. Shindou took the tray from Ethan and walked over to place it before Hayden. “We are being kind of ridiculous.”

Hayden nodded in agreement and leaned back slowly, taking in his sister. “I guess it’s kind of fun to play outside our norm.”

Shindou nodded in agreement before sitting on the couch across from Hayden and motioning for Kylee to sit. Kylee giggled and ran over to plop on the floor between the two couches.

HASTE – Chapter 2

Morning came far too early and the sleepless Shindou watched as his princess stirred in his arms. The sun had been up for a while now and it was only a matter of time before the household realized that Shindou’s bed was empty. He’d tried to free himself several times but couldn’t seem to drag himself away from the sleeping goddess beside him. He attempted to move once more but only proved to wake Kylee from her slumber.

As her eyes blinked into focus, Shindou smiled gently and brushed her hair from her face. “Good morning, Kylee.”

Kylee stared her brother in bewilderment as she tried to register why they were in bed together. As the events of the previous night poured into her mind she blushed and rolled away.

“I’m so sorry, Shin.” she mumbled as she tossed her legs over the side of the bed to sit on the edge. Shindou moved over to her, tossing one leg on either side of her slender body and wrapping his arms around her waist.

“Why are you apologizing to me like we’re strangers?” he asked in a whimper, his eyes begging Kylee not to disown him. “I’m your brother.”

Kylee smiled and nestled into the warmth of Shindou’s chest. She went to speak but was cut short by the insistent pounding on the door, demanding entry into Kylee’s room.

Kylee went to stand and Shindou’s grip tightened as he dropped his forehead onto Kylee’s shoulder, his irritation at having been interrupted making it difficult for him to let her go to the door. Forcing his cutest pout, he whined, “I think the guys are going to kill me though. I’m really scared.”

Kylee shook her head slowly, ignoring the insistent hammering, and stood. “If they want to hurt you, they will have to go through me.”

Shindou smiled gently and stood, walking over to her and pulling her into his arms. “That’s why I love you, Kylee.”

Kylee hugged her brother back before turning to face the music. “I love you too.”

As Kylee unlocked the door and opened it, three figures marched into the room like soldiers onto a battlefield. They glared at Shindou, who now quivered behind Kylee like a child scared of being scolded.

“Get your ass over here, brat.” Hayden growled and Kylee watched Shindou flinch away from him.

Stomping up to her brothers, she raised her hand to smack Hayden and was shocked when Tao grabbed her wrist. He shook his head once and Kylee jerked free, taking a step back to recuperate. Tao had always sided with her and she wasn’t sure how to handle this new side of her brother. Why were they so angry in the first place?

“Tao, take the princess out of here.” Angelo barked and Kylee let out a feral growl as her brother made to grab her.

“If you want to keep your glasses intact, you better not touch me.” Tao looked at her in mild amusement and pulled his glasses off, dropping them to the floor and stepping towards her, his glasses crunching beneath his bare foot. Tao picked Kylee up easily, tossing her over one shoulder and carrying the kicking and screaming princess from the room.

“Put me down.” She growled. “Put me down this instant! PUT. ME. DOWN!”

Hayden watched as Angelo pushed the Princess’s door closed before turning back to their baby brother. For someone so “angelic” he seemed to be having a hard time hiding the mischievous grin now playing at his lips. This only fueled the fire growing within the two remaining brothers.

Shindou struggled desperately to regain his calculated façade, finally managing to place the childish pout on his face.

“Am I in trouble?” he whined and Hayden scowled.

Angelo crossed his arms and took a step towards Shindou. “Drop the act. Kylee’s not here to buy it.”

Shindou watched them with mock confusion before turning his back on the two and marching over to Kylee’s bed. Leaning down, he grabbed her pillow from the bed and then turned to cuddle it to his chest like a small child.

“It smells like her.” He muttered, taking in her scent and smiling playfully.

Hayden moved to quick for Angelo to react and next thing he knew, Shindou was pinned against the ground. Hayden eyes narrowed dangerously and Angelo moved to pull him off.

Pushing himself from the floor, Shindou threw on his best shocked expression before purring, “Are you more upset that I spent the night with her or that you weren’t the first to do so?”

Hayden pulled free, slugging Shindou in the face. Shindou staggered backwards before staring at his brother in a blind rage. “I didn’t do anything, you fucking asshole. I stayed beside her after you pissed her off. Though, I’m sure if I’d wanted it, I could have had her.”

It probably would’ve been better to leave the last part off but he was beyond pissed. This entire situation sucked and Shindou wondered bitterly to himself who’d wrote this crap.

“CUT!” Came the director’s voice from his chair near the camera and Shindou’s eyes followed the sound to see Ethan standing over the man with a well placed scowl.

“Thank you.” He barked and the director cringed at the child’s tantrum.

“How dare you make my brothers act like this. This script is horrible, at best. No one wants to watch a HASTE PV where all four of them are fighting for my attention. What kind of yaoi fan fiction is this?” He continued to rant, despite the director’s darkening complexion. Shindou ran off the stage and into his brother’s arms, tears now streaming down his face.

“Kylee, they made my character crazy sadistic.” He whined and Ethan watched his brother compassionately. “Change the script or we’ll get someone else to do our video.”

Yousuke popped Ethan upside his head and bowed respectfully to the director. “I apologize for my willful children. This is only their second single and they have not learned the ways of the business.”

The director nodded and called for a fifteen minute break while Yousuke pulled aside his five sons, prepared to give the scolding clearly necessary. Back in the dressing room, Ethan tossed his legs on the coffee table and leaned back into the couch with a soft thud. Angelo pulled out his cell phone and proceeded to respond to some of his two hundred text messages. Hayden plopped down beside Ethan and grabbed the controller to the XBOX 360, quickly booting into his save file for Halo Reach. Shindou dismissed himself to the corner and pulled out his latest volume of Fairy Tail, picking up on the scene where the new Oracian Seis appeared. Tao pulled out his Calculus II book and proceeded to meticulously solve every formula in his current chapter. Yousuke scowled at his five boys, noticing that Ethan was already drifting to sleep.

“GUYS!” Yousuke barked and everyone looked at him unenthusiastically. “I understand you’re all tired. I know these last two weeks have been exhausting between practice for your first live, recording for the drama, and your new PV, but work with me. Y’all can have some time off in a few weeks. Let’s just get through your initial debut and we’ll be gold. And Ethan, stop causing problems. You can’t go around picking fights with every director you don’t like.”

Ethan dropped his feet to the floor and rolled his eyes before responding, “What kind of story is this? It’s bad enough he made me out to be a female in disguise but he also made it so all my brothers are madly in love with me?”

Yousuke smirked and Ethan felt nauseous. “I wrote the script.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed and he fought to maintain composure. “Don’t you think it’s a little risky to have me act as a female?”

“Why is it risky? You are female.” Yosuke replied calmly.

Angelo stepped forward, shushing Ethan with a mere glance. “I think what Ethan is saying is won’t this put him at risk of being discovered.”

Hayden nodded in agreement and Shindou walked from the corner to sit on the arm of the couch near Ethan.

“I understand what you guys are saying and I understand the concern but the best way to hide his true gender is to make everyone think that she is a very girlish he. We do that by placing him in situations where he’s forced to act feminine, so in case he ever slips up he can blame it on his past characters.”

Tao nodded in understanding while the other four stared vacantly. Yousuke sighed and shook his head before stating firmly, “Just trust me. Knight Records is a male only company. I wouldn’t risk my reputation if I wasn’t completely sure that this is the best way to keep things under wraps.”

Ethan glowered and crossed his arms before beckoning him once more, “Why the sibling love situation?”

Yousuke looked around the room in mild amusement before resting his gaze on Ethan’s naïve expression. “I thought it would make things more interesting.”

HASTE – Chapter 1

Hayden had been waiting impatiently in the foyer when Tao finally returned with Kylee. He opened the door and waited as she shuffled into the house, her head hung in exhaustion. Without another word, Tao marched upstairs and left her to defend herself against Hayden’s barrage of questions. Traitor

Hayden walked forward and pulled Kylee into his arms, hugging her as if she might shatter if he squeezed too hard. “Where did that bastard take you? He didn’t do anything strange to you? Are you okay, angel?”

Kylee squirmed to free herself and then stared at her brother blankly. “I am capable of taking care of myself, Hayden Nii-san.”

Hayden scowled at the comment before dismissing it as a small child trying to gain independence for the first time. “What took you so long to get back?”

“I’m not going to justify myself to you. I am 13 now. I shouldn’t have to tell you everything that I do.” She muttered, bitterness towards the situation slowly consuming her.

“Yousuke left you in my care while he is in Osaka. I can’t take care of you if you’re not here.” Hayden growled, his temper rising despite his usual composure.

“DAD said to make sure I don’t run away from work, which I didn’t. It’s my day off, damn it. I will do as I please.” She spat before storming up the stairs, a shocked Hayden staring dumbfoundedly at her back.

“She actually cursed at me?” He whined before turning to see a figure peeking from the door to the living room.

“Don’t say a thing, shorty.” Hayden growled before storming out of the house and marching to a bench in the yard to pout like a child.

The form watched after his brother in complete contempt, hating the nickname more than words could speak. He then glanced up the stairs after his only solace in this house of men and moved to follow, taking the steps two at a time and coming to Kylee’s bedroom door. He knocked softly and heard shuffling from inside the room.

“Kylee? It’s just me. Hayden went to sulk outside.” He whimpered and the door swung open moments later to a clearly ragged child.

“Shin.”

Kylee smiled softly and stepped aside to let him into her room before locking the door to the rest of the house. Takahashi Shindou was the closest in age to her and she found he was, often, the only one who could understand her. Kylee crossed her room, empty except for a few pieces of furniture, and plopped down onto the oversized California king bed.

When HASTE had officially announced their debut, Yousuke, their adoptive father, had stripped her room of all signs of her true gender. She’d already been living as a boy since he adopted the five of them but this had always been the one place she could be herself. Now, that wasn’t even the case.

“Are you tired?” Shindou asked softly as he approached the bed nervously, his hands playing circles in front of him. “Do you want to rant to me?”

Kylee nodded lightly and Shindou climbed into the bed, lying down with his arms open in her direction. She crawled over and curled up into her brother’s gentle embrace, as she had done on several occasions recently. Shindou had expected Kylee to say something or even to cry, though she would never show that weakness to anyone, but he hadn’t expected what happened next. Her breathing slowed and he glanced down to see Kylee’s beautiful face, overcome by sleep.

Shindou smiled and watched her protectively. She must have been really exhausted if she had let her guard down so easily. Kylee’s lips parted in her sleep and she muttered something inaudible. Shindou leaned forward to catch the end of her resting rant.

“…suki.”

The word was enough to fluster Shindou and he made to leave his sister’s bed when Kylee’s hands pulled him closer. Shindou groaned and then chuckled lightly to himself.

Leaning down to place a kiss on Kylee’s forehead, Shindou muttered softly in her ear, “You’re being too defenseless, Ohime-sama.”

HASTE – Intro

Silver eyes stared perplexedly at the title page of JPN Weekly, the revered JPop magazine that currently occupied over half the shelf. From beneath the rim of her black baseball cap, the young girl gaped at the cover incredulously. The boy before her looked towards the reader with fervor, his eyes speaking of mysteries most girls would love to unravel. She knew the face of this idol all too well, but the boy before her was too different from the child she had once known.

“Kyaaa,” Came the squeal of a child walking past as she spotted the article and rushed over to pick up a copy.

“Mommy, can we please get it?” the girl begged and her mother went to protest before seeing the cover and blushing lightly.  The woman, in her late thirties by appearance, nodded once and walked to the counter to pay. As they exited the store, the black haired half adjusted her hat to hide the creeping blush that now nipped at her checks.

She sighed and tried to take a cleansing breath when someone whispered in her ear, causing chills to devour her flesh. She spun around in annoyance and glared at the sizzling piece of man before her. The guy grinned and whispered, “Calm down, Princess. It’s me.”

The girl’s hands clenched into fists at her side, making the new arrival take a step back to apologize. “It was a joke. My bad.”

She sighed, her anger waning as she replied, “It isn’t funny, Angelo. What if someone had overheard you?”

Takahashi Angelo smirked and took a step towards the rack, picking up a copy of the magazine. He eyed the cover over and smiled gently before leaning forward to place a kiss on the lips of the featured star. Crimson engulfed the girl’s face as she watched the scene before her in astonishment and apprehension. Her brother, an adult by society’s eyes, was dragging the attention of half the store. Before she’d had time to think, she’d moved to snatch the article from his hands, her cap falling to ground in her rush. The room went eerily silent as the scene unfolded and she could have sworn she heard the cicada chirping outside. In the next moment, the room had erupted into screams and she dropped her head in hand before glowering at her brother in disdain.

“It’s HASTE. Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Girls, women and teens alike, stampeded forward, clawing their way towards the young idols. From somewhere behind her, a hand grabbed her shirt and yanked her towards the back door and out into the streets of Tokyo, Angelo being left to fend the horde. Her savior was shrouded behind a grey hood and her heart fluttered for a moment in anticipation of some “red string of fate” moment she hoped would occur. The man dragged her further and further from the store, and the rioting fans. Turning into a small alley, he came to a stop before turning to face her. She stared expectantly as the hero pulled his hood off.

“Are you insane?” Growled the young man, his eyes quivering with anger as he eyed her anxiously.

“Tao!” She gasped, her muscles relaxing as the identity of her liberator came to light. She wasn’t sure if she was relieved or disappointed but she knew that she shouldn’t have expected much, after all this wasn’t some shoujo manga. There was no way one of her idols would simply appear before her.

Takahashi Tao sighed, watching his sister expectantly. He pulled a copy of the JPN Weekly magazine from under his hood and held it out to her. She stared at the cover once more, embarrassment flushing her face.

Tao watched several emotions play across her face before reaching forward to take her hand. “We’re going now. I think Angelo has already gotten you into enough trouble for one day, kidnapping you for this damn shopping trip. Why can’t he ever pick presents for his girlfriends by himself?”

She giggled lightly before punching Tao in the arm and pulling away. She knew Tao was trying to put her at ease and that comforted her more than he could imagine. She loved her brothers, even if they drove her insane. She wouldn’t be who she was today, if it wasn’t for them.

Who was she? She sometimes asked herself that very question. Though, truth be told, she knew the answer better than most. Youngest idol of the JPop world and current young Artist of the Year, her name was Kylee, Ethan to the entertainment world, and she was the “boy” who had conquered the hearts of Japan overnight. The Japanese populace, young and old alike, had fallen in love with her angelic voice and girlish looks. Her face was known across the country as HASTE’s lead singer. Grown women dreamed of kidnapping her and young girl’s dreamed of making her their first boyfriend. She chuckled to herself at the irony and Tao glanced over in concern.

“You alright?” Tao asked and she turned to look at him in apprehensively.

“Can I ask you something, Nii-san?”

Tao nodded and watched anxiously, as if expecting the sky to fall from the heavens. He’d never seen his sister show such an expression. It was weak and vulnerable, and all too…

“What would everyone do if they ever found out that I am a female?”

Girlish. In that instant he knew, there would come a time when the truth would be found out. Even if her body never managed to mature to a woman’s, her expressions would only become more feminine. Time was currently HASTE’s greatest enemy.

If only Tao could have guessed then that the Takahashi family would have many more enemies to battle soon.
